History

ITHACA, N.Y. — Harvard took a 17-14 lead halfway through the second quarter and never looked back on Friday night when the Crimson downed Cornell football, 38-20, on Schoellkopf Field. With the loss, Cornell drops to 1-3 (1-1 Ivy) while Harvard improves to 3-1 (1-1 Ivy).

Senior quarterback Jameson Wang completed 21-of-30 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He rushed for a team-best 67 yards and a house call. Ean Pope posted 45 yards on nine attempts. Robert Tucker III had one rush for 39 yards. Samuel Musungu led the receiving core with six receptions for 84 yards and a score. Ryder Kurtz had six catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. Luke Banbury led the defense with eight tackles includeng two for loss. Joey Cheshire and Michael O’Keefe followed with seven tackles apiece. Jeremiah Lewis posted six stops.

Both Harvard quarterbacks posted QBRs over 200. Jaden Craig completed 20-of-27 passes for four touchdowns, while Charles DePrima went four-for-four and a touchdown pass. Xaviah Bascon led the rushing core with 23 attempts for 99 yards. DePrima had four runs for 24 yards. Cooper Barkate of seven receptions for 130 yards for two scores. Scott Woods II caught 10 passes for 76 yards. Seamus Gilmartin caught just two passes, both for touchdowns.

FIRST QUARTER

• Cornell was first on the boards for Friday Night Lights against the Crimson. Wang went a perfect 5-for-5 with some rushes mixed between, concluding the drive with a four-yard connection to Kurtz for the touchdown.

• Harvard charged down field on its first drive of the day, but the Cornell defense held strong, holding the Crimson to a field goal.

• Cornell’s next drive stalled at the Harvard 42-yard line, and the Crimson capitalized on the momentum swing to go up, 10-7.

SECOND QUARTER

• Cornell could not convert on the third-and-sixth to open the second quarter, so Ayden McCarter came out to boot the ball away.

• Harvard was stood up on a fourth down at the Cornell 46 on the following drive, setting up the Big Red with its shortest field of the evening.

• Cornell capitalized, taking a 14-10 lead off a Wang rushing touchdown.

• Harvard answered on a 54-yard connection from Craig to Seamus Gilmartin, retaking the lead for the Crimson at 17-14.

• Cornell’s next drive ended in a failed fourth down conversion with the ball spotted inches of the first down marker, and the Crimson redeemed their previous fourth down attempt with a touchdown pass on fourth-and-three at the Cornell 20.

• The Crimson tacked on 14 more before the end of the quarter while holding Cornell to just two first downs over the last 8:36 of the half.

THIRD QUARTER

• Cornell stood up the Crimson on the opening drive of the quarter when a muffed snap on a field goal attempt turned into a broken up pass play for Harvard.

• The Big Red was held to a three-and-out on its first drive of the quarter, and a 45-yard return by Woods II gave Harvard first-and-10 on the Cornell 27-yard line.

• Harvard boosted its lead to 38-14, and on the ensuing Big Red drive seemed to hold the Cornell to a punt. A designed fake punt turned into 39-yard rush by Robert Tucker III got the Big Red a first down and more, and back-to-back first down passes set up Wang for a five-yard connection with Musungu for the touchdown. The two-point conversion fell incomplete, bringing Cornell’s score to 20.

FOURTH QUARTER

• The Crimson started the fourth quarter with a first down on hte first play, but a eight-yard sack by Luke Banbury and an offensive holding penalty set up second-and-28 for Harvard. The Crimson could not convert, and Cornell got the ball back at its own 25 after a designed quarterback punt ended in the endzone.

• Neither team could find any points throughout the fourth, bringing up a 38-20 final.

MORE NOTES AND NOTABLES

• For the third time in four games, Cornell was first on the boards. It marks the first time since the 2022 season that Cornell was first on the boards in a battle against the Crimson.

• Wang is now tied for second all-time in touchdowns accounted for at Cornell with Ricky Rahne. The pair each have 59.

• The Big Red hits the road for the first time in three weeks when the team travels to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell on Saturday, October 19.

• The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
