AKRON, Ohio – The No. 25 Akron swimming and diving team took a commanding lead after the first day of the Akron Zips Classic.

Akron, which leads with 459 points, is followed by Youngstown State (255 points), Xavier University (209 points) and Denison University (168 points).

The Zips started the day with a splash in the one-meter jump, with the top three points going to the Blue and Gold. Elizabeth Noble took first place with a score of 274.65 Laurel Smith came second with a score of 263.45 and Paige Bush took third place with 261.20 points.

Akron then took the top two places in the 400-yard medley relay. The Zips “Z” Troop from Madelyn Gatrall, Claire Cox, Abigail Daniel And Ada Szwabinska took first place with a time of 3:37.41, while the “I” team from Rebecca Reid, Madelyn Bosler, Aislinn holder And Felicia Klintemar finished in 3:41.79.

The 500 yard freestyle saw Elle Couture took fourth place with a time of 5:01.23, while Daniel set a new meet record in the 200-yard IM after finishing first with a time of 1:59.85. She beat her teammate Rebecca Reids Time of 2:00.15, set in 2023.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Akron took nine of the top 10 spots. Szwabinska paced the Zips with a time of 22.98 to take second place. Abby Daniel finished third with a time of 22.99. Olivia Oyster of Xavier took first place and set a meet record with a time of 22.69. Oyster’s time beat the previous record of 22.81, set in 2021 by Sarah Watson of Akron.

Akron capped off the first day of competition with the two best times in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The “Z” team consisting of Klintemar, Reid, Daniel and Gatrall took first place with a time of 7:22.22. The Zips “I” team from Julia Mautercouture, Helena Lalkovic And Brienne Trumper took second place with a timer of 7:34.16.

On the men’s side, Patrick Adams of Youngstown State set a meet record with a score of 279.90 in the three-meter jump, surpassing Cody Thill of YSU, who posted a score of 251.25 in 2021.

Xavier’s men’s “A” squad of Matt Fralic, Ethan Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson set a meet record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:16.91, surpassing the previous mark of 3 :18.12 from Miami (OH). takes place in 2019.

The Zips Classic ends tomorrow, October 12th, with the first events starting at 10am
