One of the last remaining video stores in Washington to remain open after the fundraiser

One of Washington state’s last video rental stores is still standing after raising a third of the nearly $2 million it needs to keep its doors open.

The influx of cash allowed the store to extend its lease for another two years. However, the store says the campaign is far from over.

Scarecrow Video has operated in Seattle’s University District since the late 1980s and became a nonprofit organization in 2014. The collection contains more than 148,000 titles.

The store says it will continue to raise funds for the city’s long-term future.

Managing director Kate Barr says the store is looking forward to its biggest day of the year, International Video Store Day, on Saturday October 19.

“We’re usually super busy and there’s definitely a party atmosphere,” Barr said.
