WHAT IS AT STAKE?

Two former Pac-12 members will meet for the first time since moving to the Big 12. The Utes had a bye week following their first loss of the season, 23-10 at home against Arizona on September 28th. The Utes, as usual, were one of the toughest defensive teams in the country and could get quarterback Cameron Rising back after he missed most of his four games. The Sun Devils have made great strides in their second season under coach Kenny Dillingham, recovering from a narrow loss to Texas Tech last week by defeating Kansas 35-31.

KEY MATCHUP

Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt against the Utah defense. Leavitt is off to a good start in the desert after transferring from Michigan State. Leavitt and the Sun Devils face their toughest test yet against Utah. The Utes are physical, have one of the Big 12’s best pass rushes and rank fourth nationally in third downs, allowing teams to convert 24.7% of the time.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Utah: On the rise. Utah’s injury-plagued quarterback was expected to be one of the best in the country after missing last season with a serious knee injury suffered the year before. Instead, Rising hasn’t played since he dislocated a finger making that throw in the second week of the season. Coach Kyle Whittingham was cautious about Rising’s return this week, but added that there was a chance he could play.

Arizona State: RB Cameron Skattebo. A year after injuries forced him to play everywhere from quarterback to tight end, Skattebo excelled as Arizona State’s standout running back. The Sacramento State transfer was named the Big 12’s co-offensive player of the week after rushing for 182 yards and a touchdown against Kansas.
