The Steelheads practice in training camp before their first preseason game

BOISE, IDAHO – The Idaho Steelheads are cranking it up on the fifth day of training camp ahead of their first preseason game against the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday.

  • The puck drop for the first preseason game will take place on Saturday evening at 7:10 p.m.
  • Goaltender Tomas Sholl returns with his Steelhead for the first time in four years.
  • Sholl is six games away from breaking the franchise’s ECHL wins record and 19 away from tying the all-time title.

“I know we can expect sold-out games every night this season. With that comes the responsibility to work hard every night,” said goalkeeper Tomas Sholl.

The Idaho Steelheads completed the fifth day of training camp on Friday and await their first preseason game on Saturday.

Striker AJ White explained: “We have a good returning team but also a lot of new faces. So we’re getting them used to our systems and getting everyone on the same page. This week we’re just working on those issues.”

Once this team starts working together, sixth-year captain AJ White says the goal is the same as every year.

“Winning the Kelly Cup. “It’s especially important to me to be able to bring that back to Boise,” smiled White.

There is a good group of returning players, but one of them is returning for the first time in four years.

Sholl exclaimed, “It’s great. I’ve played in Europe for the last three years and was in Texas the year before. I’ve always felt like a steelhead at heart. So it’s really cool to be back! “It feels like home.”

Sholl is one of the best goaltenders to ever protect the net at Idaho Central.

“He put up a lot of great numbers as a steelhead. He’s in the top three in pretty much every category,” White explained.

Sholl only needs 6 wins to break the ECHL franchise record for most wins, and just 19 of those wins are just 19 away from tying the all-time franchise wins record. However, Sholl says the awards are not his main focus.

Sholl concluded: “I always believe that the individual comes second. Every year my main goal is to win as a team. There won’t be victories in every single game. But we can promise that we can do it.” We have to put in this work every day and do our best every night to make the fans proud.
