The Rockford Mass Transit District is offering free rides on Election Day

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) will get you to the polls for free on Election Day.

The free rides are available to fixed route and paratransit users. Official polling hours for local elections are 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. RMTD offers free rides from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., giving riders more time to get to their respective polling location.

To receive the free ride, passengers on fixed routes are asked to self-report to operators that they are either coming or going to a polling station within RMTD’s service area.

Paratransit riders are asked to notify dispatch in advance when planning their trip and also provide the address of their polling place. The same will be asked when returning from the original polling station. Paratransit riders are also asked to plan their trips before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024.

Free rides will only be offered on November 5th and will not be available for early voting on the days prior.

Orlando Toatley, marketing and communications specialist for the Rockford Mass Transit District, said, “Our board has always been extremely supportive of the initiative. This is something we have also seen across public transport. Like I said, we’re here to connect individuals to the places they can’t go on their own. So when it comes to taking part in the polls before the election, that is extremely important.”
