Crime in Chicago: Chopper 7 charged with thieves stealing boxes from Austin freight train on West Side | LIVE

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chopper 7 is on the west side of the city on Friday evening for a police operation near train tracks.

A train could be seen stopping at the location near the Austin area.

“Union Pacific, along with the Chicago Police Department, is responding to cargo thefts near Lake St. and Lockwood Avenue in Chicago. Railroad collapses pose a safety threat to the public, our employees and local law enforcement officials,” a statement from Union Pacific read.

Police officers could be seen near the train and railway tracks investigating. Thieves could be seen stealing boxes from a freight train.

Chopper 7 captured police officers chasing people and seen stealing boxes from train cars in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood on Friday afternoon.

Officers could be seen drawing their weapons and pointing them at at least one vehicle that fled the scene.

It was not yet known whether any arrests were made.

“Inbound and outbound UPW trains are stopped near Kedzie due to police operations,” Metra said.
