The mayor says the money spent on construction will be billed to the owners

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – For the past few weeks, the City of Jonesboro has been working with engineers to find solutions for the old Citizens Bank building.

According to a media release, Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver and other city officials met with civil engineer Jordan Lane and other construction professionals at the bank.

According to the press release, the protective wall that will provide security to First Horizon Bank across the street has been completed.

“Plans are currently being developed to stabilize the prefabricated sections and panels of the Citizens Bank Building,” Copenhaver said. “City officials are working with engineers to design this work and we expect to have the plan in place early next week along with an estimated timeline for completion.”

The city plans to send the bank’s related parties the cost estimate for the stabilization work and give them a timely deadline “to contract a company for the required work.”

“All city funds spent on the project will be documented and billed to the building owners,” Copenhaver explained. “Our primary concerns are making the building safe, supporting downtown businesses and getting this intersection reopened. “If the building owners do not implement the recommended emergency measures, the city will.”

On Wednesday, September 25, the city closed a portion of Main Street after a city council member noticed a possible safety hazard.
