Is Anthony Edwards playing tonight? Latest injury updates ahead of Intense Wolves vs Sixers showdown

Are the Minnesota Timberwolves ready to take on the Philadelphia 76ers? The Timberwolves got off to a good start in the preseason, winning their game against the Los Angeles Lakers by 17 points. However, if the past is any indication, the team needs to be more careful when playing against Joel Embiid and Co. After all, the 76ers are 7-3 in their last ten games against the Timberwolves. Add in the fact that the franchise now has Paul George and the competition would likely become tougher. With Karl-Anthony Towns now playing for the New York Knicks, the Timberwolves will have to rely on Anthony Edwards to power their offense. Unfortunately, fans will only find out whether the star will be fit during the game.

According to the Timberwolves injury report highlighted by ESPN, Anthony Edwards continues to hold the ‘Day after day’ Status. The player was previously ruled out of the Timberwolves’ preseason debut against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 23-year-old, who won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris just two months ago, had fewer breaks than his teammates. Given that LeBron James and Anthony Davis were also forced to rest and not play in their preseason debut, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch ultimately benched Edwards to give them some much-needed rest before things heated up. While both LeBron and Davis returned for the Lakers’ second game, a final decision on Edwards likely won’t be announced until the next few hours of the upcoming game.

Anthony Edwards dealt with a number of injuries last season. From issues with his illness, hips and knees at the start of the 2023-24 season to an incredible dunk against the Denver Nuggets that cost him a dislocated left middle finger, the shooting guard has been just as injury-prone as Anthony Davis. Still, not only did the player appear in 79 regular season games and start in 78, he also teamed with Karl-Anthony Towns to lead the Timberwolves to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2004. With an average of 25.1 points during the regular season and 27.6 in the playoffs, he showed why he deserved the title “The Second Coming of Michael Jordan.” Unfortunately, all of these stats won’t be of much use if Edwards isn’t available to face Joel Embiid and company.

Adding to the challenges is Julius Randle joining Edwards on the injury report, both listed as day-to-day. The Timberwolves’ newest addition has not been on the field since January 27th after sustaining an injury to his right shoulder. After undergoing season-ending surgery in April, the player has spent the last few months recovering. Things seemed to be improving for him after his public appearance at a soccer game a few weeks ago. Despite this, he did not play in the Timberwolves-Lakers game. Now fans won’t receive confirmation of Randle’s availability until the final minutes.

As his star player, head coach Chris Finch may want to rest Edwards for more preseason games to ensure he gives his all in the regular season. However, if there’s anyone who can lead the team to break its unwanted 3-7 record against the 76ers, it’s the 23-year-old.

How did Anthony Edwards perform against the Philadelphia 76ers?

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Anthony Edwards and Joel Embiid were close, with Edwards even defending Embiid against boos by saying, “You want three seven-footers?” about the French team. But in the NBA, Edwards hasn’t held back against Embiid and his team – and that competitive edge is likely to continue.

In the eight games Anthony Edwards played against the Philadelphia 76ers, he averaged 23.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists. He achieved this by making 8.4 of 19.6 field goal attempts (42.7%), 2.8 of 7.9 three-pointers (34.9%) and 4.4 of 4.9 free throws (89.7%). Amid a strong defense, the player often managed to get around the block and make shots that maintained his average score. The dunk he performed in February 2023 was so amazing that it not only drew cheers from the crowd, but also brought his teammates on the bench to their feet.

Despite the player’s skill, the Timberwolves continue to have problems with the 76ers. The last four meetings have featured alternating victories, with one team winning one game while the other claimed victory next. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the winner of the upcoming matchup. However, the Timberwolves’ chances will certainly increase if they are led by Anthony Edwards.
