The Louisiana DoE announces plans to reduce the amount of time students spend on testing

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE) – The Louisiana Department of Education announced immediate changes they say will reduce the amount of time students spend taking standardized tests.

Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley announced Oct. 9 that students in grades 3-8 will spend 20% less time on ELA and math LEAP tests by eliminating redundancies and streamlining the writing portion.

Brumley said the LDOE worked with testing experts to ensure no changes were made to the integrity of the tests while implementing strategies to reduce time.

“We are taking a responsible approach to operationally reducing standardized testing time without compromising accuracy,” Brumley said. “I hear from parents, teachers and students all the time about this issue. These changes address their concerns while allowing us to continue to provide reliable and valid results.”

The shorter LEAP assessments will begin in April 2025.

Brumley said the ELA tests will be about 40 to 75 minutes shorter than before, depending on the grade level. Depending on the grade, the math exams will be around 30-40 minutes shorter than before.
