New DWI search map available free for Minnesotans

The Minnesota BCA has launched a new DWI dashboard for the public for the first time, allowing people to search for information about offenders and incidents in their area.

What we know

For the first time, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) announces that a new version of its mapping tool will help Minnesotans learn about impaired driving accidents and arrests in their communities.

The DWI dashboard allows users to search for information such as a person’s age, alcohol concentration, day of the incident, and more. The results can then be downloaded in various formats.

The DWI Dashboard data was first created by the BCA in 2016 and was previously only available to law enforcement agencies.

What officials say

“We are bringing together the data in a way that we hope will help both law enforcement and the public better understand the impact of impaired driving on Minnesota communities,” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said in a statement.

According to a press release, the DWI dashboard was created with funding from the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

“Saving lives on Minnesota’s roads requires robust data that can inform traffic safety programs and change dangerous driving habits,” OTS Director Mike Hanson said in a statement. “There is no excuse for driving impaired. The DWI Dashboard provides our partners and now the public with a valuable resource to make progress in preventing tragedies.”
