The Chargers are signing free agent CB Eli Apple after numerous injuries

With injuries threatening the cornerback room, the Los Angeles Chargers signed veteran Eli Apple on Monday following the team’s win over the Denver Broncos.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Apple will start on the practice squad.

However, this stay in the squad could only be short-lived for Apple. The Chargers played most of Sunday’s AFC West win essentially without their top three cornerbacks on defense in Jesse Minter, and Kristian Fulton was one of the guys injured during the game.

Aside from Fulton’s injury, starter Ja’Sir Taylor missed the win in Denver and Asante Samuel Jr. was part of a strange wave of pregame roster moves, going on injured reserve.

Apple, 29, was a first-round pick in 2016 who resurrected his career in Cincinnati in 2021-22 before spending last year with the Miami Dolphins. Even though he never lived up to that 10th overall grade, he is a quality player who can start on the perimeter in emergency situations.

The Chargers have a little more time than usual to prepare for next Monday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, where Apple could be called up from the practice squad to serve as a backup.
