Eric Cannata presents video for “The Wave”.

Eric Cannata has shared a video for his new single “The Wave.” The track is available now everywhere via Industry Houseplant/Montecarlo Sounds. The video was directed by filmmaker Taylor Thompson. “The Wave” announces the upcoming release of the songwriter/guitarist/producer’s full-length solo debut. Holding on to the sacredwill be released everywhere on Friday, January 24, 2025. A limited vinyl bundle with an exclusive t-shirt is available to pre-order now via Paper & Wax Co.

““The Wave” is the first single from my debut solo album “Holding Onto the Holy,” says Eric Cannata. “It’s a song about a tidal wave rolling toward the coast of California after the Big One earthquake. While everyone runs to safety, I quietly make my way to the beach to celebrate my death. The song and album are about finding the threads of joy and hope in a time when our world is so turbulent and uncertain.

“I hired a new friend, Taylor Thompson, to direct the video. I’m on a relaxing ride to the sea in a 1970s Beetle while everyone runs for their lives. As I sit in an old beach chair, the wave ends up hitting me and I am swept away. Then I wake up in a flower meadow as my fiancée Hannah picks me up. We shot this video and three other songs all on 16mm film. I’m fascinated by old media and the tactile element of film as well as records.”

Cannata will mark the arrival of The Wave with two solo acoustic live performances to kick off Young The Giant’s anniversary events at the historic Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, scheduled for January 19-20, 2025.

Cannata first delved into the solo stream with 2020’s Lonely Beast, a loneliness-inspired folk and psychedelia EP. Now he returns with Holding Onto the Holy, a self-produced full-length collection about togetherness and loving life as the world falls apart, sparked by his relationship with his fiancé and musical partner Connolly. The project was created during the ten-day Covid quarantine, which led Cannata to find a new voice with a scratchy throat and an old microphone. The multi-talented instrumentalist and songwriter drew inspiration from classic pop and rock icons such as Roy Orbison, Harry Nilsson and The Velvet Underground, emphasizing fun and exploration in pursuit of other muses such as childhood cartoons, folklore and daydreams. Cannata completed his evolving sound with a range of instruments including 12-string acoustic guitars, a vintage Solina String Ensemble string synthesizer and a vintage piano, with additional accompaniment from Kosta Galanopoulos on drums and father Ernie Cannata on piano, adding a few trusty voices in Connolly and his long-time friend and collaborator Jon O’Brien, who took care of the mix and additional technology.
