One thing Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have in common is how they and other royal women have embraced the pencil skirt trend

Since Christian Dior introduced the modern pencil skirt in 1954, it has become a staple of business attire.

Designed to enhance the feminine silhouette, it features a slim fit that accentuates the waist and hips and flares slightly towards the hem.

Unsurprisingly, many royal women have favored this powerful silhouette for years, most notably Meghan Markle.

And Catherine, Princess of Wales, has also embraced the pencil skirt trend. She has opted for the slim fit look at least twice.

Although the pencil skirt has evolved over the years with different design details, it remains an essential piece of clothing.

It makes a strong comeback for Spring/Summer 2024, appearing in styles ranging from short and slit to long, crafted from textured crepe and patent leather.

Many royal women have favored this powerful silhouette for years, most notably Meghan Markle

Since her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex has consistently favored pencil skirts from designers like Givenchy, Carolina Herrera and Roland Mouret.

And she has developed a particular preference for medium-length leather skirts from BOSS.

In October 2018, Meghan attended the University of Chichester wearing a £369 fir green version with a high waist and a figure-hugging fit.

The next year, for a panel with Prince Harry, she chose a £359 ruby red leather skirt from BOSS, creating a striking, tonal look.

Queen Letizia of Spain had worn the same skirt the day before during her state visit to South Korea with King Felipe.

She paired the luxe leather skirt with a Carolina Herrera blouse, adding her own fashion twist to royal protocol.

And this isn’t the only pencil skirt from BOSS to receive royal recognition.

The pale blue belted ‘Vrima’ skirt was worn by Queen Letizia, Princess Sofia of Sweden and Queen Mary of Denmark, cementing the American brand’s global appeal.

The three ladies styled it in contrasting ways, with Mary scoring style points with a polka dot blouse and sky-high pumps.

During her official visit to Washington to see King Abdullah in February 2023, Queen Rania of Jordan wore a business-appropriate ensemble consisting of a white shirt and a mid-length skirt.

The latter by Christian Dior impressed with its striking checkered print, which is reminiscent of tweed.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Princess Charlene of Monaco presented this design in October 2016, shortly after its catwalk debut.

Even Catherine, Princess of Wales, has embraced the pencil skirt trend.

In 2008, at the Order of the Garter, when she was still Prince William’s girlfriend, Kate wore a polka dot skirt suit.

This two-piece suit, which also included a perfectly tailored, knee-length skirt, was worn by Kate to an event in Dublin in 2007 when she split from William and attracted a lot of attention.

In December 2013, she wore it again to South Africa House in London to sign Nelson Mandela’s book of condolence.

Another pencil skirt in Kate’s collection comes from Alexander McQueen.

She paired this military-inspired skirt, embellished with gold anchor-embossed buttons, with a matching blouse during a tour of Birmingham in August 2011.

She revisited this elegant look during visits to Bletchley Park in June 2014 and Portsmouth in May 2016.
