The 5K “Rack Run” race raises funds for breast cancer patients

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Over 350 people have signed up for the Rack Run 5k to raise breast cancer awareness.

The event was hosted by Team Breast Friends, a nonprofit organization that provides funds to breast cancer patients to help fund their treatments.

“We will be sending the breast cancer patient a check to help her overcome the stress caused by money,” said race organizer Patty Frantz.

Many of the runners were breast cancer survivors or ran to support friends or family.

“We had friends who died of breast cancer. So we’re out here to support people and just help raise money,” said runner Peyton Gray.

The Pink Heals Eastern Iowa fire truck was also at the race and was signed by all of the breast cancer survivors. It is part of a nationwide charity supporting cancer patients. Breast cancer survivor Diana Bramow brought the fire truck so other survivors could sign.

“Seeing a truck in your honor and then asking you to sign the truck so your name goes everywhere is pretty therapeutic,” Bramow said.

Even people still battling breast cancer took part in the Rack Race. Stef Swails, a board member of Team Breast Friends, said she spoke with a survivor who was nearing the completion of her treatments.

“She has been a survivor for two months. She just finished chemotherapy this week. And she came and had the biggest, brightest smile. And that’s what it’s all about: helping people,” Swails said.
