Video forecast for Sunday evening

Despite a warm and humid start to the week, a strong cold front passage will send temperatures plummeting in just a few days.

Tonight and tomorrow: Clouds won’t be a big problem Sunday night. That’s good news for those hoping to catch a glimpse of a comet in the early evening sky. With clear skies and decreasing winds, some low cloud fields cannot be ruled out in selected areas early Monday. If these develop at certain points, they would burn off after sunrise with daytime warming. Mostly sunny skies will remain, driving up the mercury levels on the thermometers. Look for high temperatures in the low 90s in the Capital Region. The humidity will also be noticeable. While it’s not enough to reach summer limits, it’s enough to create a sultry feeling at times.

An air quality warning was also issued for the Baton Rouge and New Orleans metropolitan areas on Monday. Warm temperatures, light winds and abundant sunshine can lead to ozone formation. Particularly in the afternoon, concentrations could rise to levels that are harmful to people with breathing difficulties.

Next: The increased warmth and humidity on Monday will be a response to the approaching cold front. This front will arrive Monday evening, but not with enough momentum to make a clean pass. The cold front in question will subside in the region on Tuesday. Cooler and drier air remains north of the border, while the opposite applies to areas south. This makes the forecast for Tuesday more difficult as the weather may vary from city to city depending on the location of the front. So if your community ends up on the cooler side, that’s a nice treat. But Tuesday has the potential to be a warm and humid day.

But on Tuesday night, the cold front finally gains enough momentum to cross the area. This will lead to some big changes for the rest of the week. Afternoon highs look inviting, reaching the 70s on Wednesday and Thursday. The lowest temperatures in the morning will also be quite cool. Some cities could see their first 40s of the season as early as Thursday morning. It won’t last forever, temperatures will gradually rise until next weekend. But even then it looks pleasant with little to no rain in sight.

The Tropics: Shower and thunderstorm activity remains limited as a well-defined low pressure area is located several hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands. While the system is currently in an unfavorable region for future development, it could experience more favorable conditions by mid to late week. A tropical depression could form by the end of the week as the system approaches or approaches the Leeward Islands. Currently, the National Hurricane Center estimates the chance of the system developing next week as medium.
