MPs are organizing a free film event for families in recovery at the Helene Shelter

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and school resource officers are giving back to a community hit hard by Hurricane Helene and offering families a chance to escape what has been a difficult road to recovery for many.

District deputies and school resource officers are hosting a special free movie night on October 13th at the Helene Shelter at the WNC Agriculture Center in Fletcher, North Carolina.

The event’s hosts said they “just wanted to let the community know we’re here for them.”

“We are absolutely excited,” said Shana Levina, a Swannanoa resident. “The kids talked about it all day and night last night – we’re just happy they get to play and run around and be kids for once.”

The event will also feature two bouncy castles for children to play in when they come for movie night.

Deputies said they hope to continue this idea and expand it to other shelters throughout the community in time.
