Pokémon Scrapped Generation 5 Mega Evolutions Due to Black and White Pokedex Hate

Key insights

  • The massive data breach that affected Game Freak is still producing new information.
  • In a new series of leaks, it has been revealed that Game Freak originally intended for Black and White 2 to feature new Pokémon, but this was scrapped due to fan backlash.
  • Fans wanted older Pokémon, and Game Freak obliged, moving many of the designs and elements into today’s Pokémon X and Y.

By now you’ve probably heard that Game Freak has become the latest target of a massive data breach. The breach, which is still yielding new leaked information, has already resulted in the Switch 2’s codename as well as Gen 10 Pokémon details and anime plot points, among other things.

A Game Freak statement was posted online on Sunday in which the company acknowledged the data breach. According to this statement, the breach occurred in August and the necessary steps were taken to curb future break-ins.

However, as mentioned above, more and more information is leaking out, and the latest leaks paint a picture of what could have been had it not been for the backlash from fans.

Game Freak had bigger plans for Black And White 2

As Centro Leaks, which was responsible for much of the information dumps, first announced on Twitter, Game Freak originally planned to have more brand new Pokémon in Black and White 2. With older Pokémon, those plans were apparently scrapped.

The designs created were then featured in Pokémon.

Information about the plans comes from a series of leaked conversations in which an employee notes that “Pokémon is not a local game translated for the world. It’s a worldwide game now.” The conversation continues and another says, “I’m afraid we’ll have to put old Pokemon in the sequels and skip the new ones.”

Despite a lot of work: “We cannot have a region with poor reception. The brand requires all regions to please people.” The backlash also apparently forced the abolition of Generation V’s Mega Evolutions. Instead, these Mega Evolutions were then carried over to older Pokémon like Charizard.

Depending on which side of the fandom you fall on, this is either a fortunate or unfortunate development. While some certainly love the presence of the original Pokémon, there’s also no shortage of people who would have liked to see some new creatures and ideas instead. In any case, it’s interesting to see how much fan feedback influences things.
