What you should know about the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend

Vince Carter was an NBA star.

An eight-time All-Star. Two-time All-NBA. 1998-99 Rookie of the Year. One of 25 players to score at least 25,000 points in the NBA. Slam Dunk Contest Champion 2000. Olympic champion at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. 2015-16 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year. Sportsmanship Award 2019-20.

Yes, he was a great dunker – winning the dunk contest and the memorable slam against France’s Frédéric Weis at the Olympics, known as the “Dunk of Death” are proof of that – but he had a lot to offer beyond that too . He was a rebounder, passer and good shooter.

His impact on basketball went far beyond stats and dunks.

He influenced a country that continues to have an impact today. Acquired by the Toronto Raptors with the No. 5 pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Carter helped turn Canada into a nation that produced several elite basketball players, a feat that seemed almost impossible three decades ago.

Carter is among 13 players, coaches, contributors and executives who will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday.
