Detective Pikachu sequel discovered in Pokémon leak

A sequel to the 2019 film Detective Pikachu seems to be in the works. When it was released over five years ago Detective Pikachu was a huge success both commercially and critically. Therefore, Pokémon fans naturally assumed that there could be a sequel at some point. And while The Pokemon Company hasn’t confirmed this yet, it seems like a follow-up film is indeed on the way.

This weekend, Pokemon franchise developer Game Freak suffered a hack that resulted in a lot of private information becoming public. True, much of what was discovered in the leak was related to the Pokemon video games, a sequel to them Detective Pikachu was also revealed. The film should be called The Great Detective Pikachu and has been in development since 2021. Not only complete plot details of the film were found in the leak, but also Kong: Skull Island Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is said to be in charge of the project.

It is currently unknown if this is being worked on The Great Detective Pikachu whether it is still running or not. The sequel was scheduled to be released in 2024, but that is apparently no longer the case. So this could indicate that the film has fallen apart internally and is no longer running, or that it has simply been put on hold. Without an official statement from The Pokemon Company, it’s hard to know what the truth might be.

Again, given the popularity of the original Detective Pikachuit seems incredibly likely that there will be a sequel at some point. Whether or not it will feature many of the same cast as the original film is difficult to say, as the sequel’s story could be focused on introducing entirely new characters. Either way, hopefully we’ll learn more about the status of The Great Detective Pikachu sometime in the coming months or years.
