Waltz says Biden’s USDA has money available to help hurricane victims

The two storms caused flooding that affected homes and farmland, destroying crops and putting livestock out of reach. Agriculture is Florida’s second largest industry.

“Right now, under President Biden, the USDA – the Department of Agriculture – is withholding this money and, in our opinion, is not distributing it as quickly as it should,” Waltz said.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency offered households $750 each as part of Serious Needs Assistance. FEMA describes the amount as “an initial payment you may receive while FEMA evaluates your eligibility for additional funds.” However, Waltz suggested that USDA could use a block grant to help local governments with the dispersal.

“You have to let go of this money. Put it in the hands of local authorities who can pass it on to our farmers,” Waltz continued. “Thirty percent of the country’s food supply comes from winter sports in Florida. And obviously the clock is ticking.”

Former President Donald Trump used a block grant system to offer aid to Florida after Hurricane Ian in 2022. Waltz claimed it was more effective because FEMA was slow to reimburse those in need. It can take years to properly submit damage reports to the authorities.

Florida is in the middle of hurricane season, which typically ends November 30th. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said FEMA will not have the resources to get through the season.
