Couple builds a free haunted house for their neighborhood

On Wood River Drive in Calallen, neighbors can see JD and Kat Tierney working to prepare their Blood River Haunted House for their annual tradition.

The Tierneys have been hosting Halloween events at their home for six years and over time they have seen the impact they have had on their community.

“It’s great to know the neighborhood is expecting this,” Kat Tierney said. “It really adds pressure to do better, and it’s good pressure. It’s a healthy level of stress.”

Neighbors across the Coastal Bend and from other states have come to witness the horrors the couple is wreaking. The Tierney house was even listed nationally on the Scare Factor website as a popular Halloween destination.

“Every year it gets a little bigger,” JD Tierney said. “Last year alone there were around 2,800 people there. We gave away over 9,000 pieces of candy. We really hope to reach over 3,000 people this year.”

What makes Tierney’s creation different from any other haunted house? They decided to open their events to the public for a reason.

“We made a promise a long time ago that it would be free as long as it was in our front yard because it was something for our local community and neighborhood,” JD said. “There are so many worse things that could happen, especially to teenagers,” that you will do on Halloween night. So I would much rather they were here, safe and out of trouble and us just looking out for each other and having fun doing it.”

The Blood River Drive House will show films the week before and the haunted house will open on Halloween night at 5:30 p.m

The Tierneys are currently looking for additional volunteers and donations to help them with their haunted house event this year. To contact them and help them, visit their Facebook and Gofundme pages.
