Badgers News: What went right for Wisconsin in its 42-7 win over Rutgers

For the second straight year, the Wisconsin Badgers scored more than 40 points against a Big Ten opponent, this time against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Piscataway. Head coach Luke Fickell and Co. did a fantastic job on both ends limiting running back Kyle Monangai better than anyone else this season.

Here’s what went right for Wisconsin.

Consistency by Braedyn Locke

After a great week against Purdue, many wondered if quarterback Braedyn Locke could hold his own against tougher opponents like Rutgers. He delivered. Locke started his day with a beautiful touchdown pass to Will Pauling in the right corner of the end zone that gave the Badgers a 7-0 lead. He did throw a pick, but continued to be very accurate on deeper passes to players like Vinny Anthony and Trech Kekahuna.

Wisconsin has lacked consistency at the quarterback position for years, so having someone who can go out there and be solid is a huge advantage for Luke Fickell and this Badgers team.

Mixture of Smash Mouth and Air Raid

This game was the most balanced the Wisconsin offense has ever seen in the Phil Longo era. His “Dairy Raid” scheme was at work in this game, helping running back Tawee Walker rush for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns. Longo’s plan was so successful in this game because a good passing game helps open up the running game and allows for longer running and passing plays.

I want to commend Coach Blazek for making such an impact here in Madison in such a short amount of time. The offensive line has looked incredible over the last three games and is a key factor for the Badgers.

Defensive excellence

I’ve always been a big fan of Mike Tressel. His defensive schemes in Cincinnati were extremely effective and unique. While his first season left something to be desired, his second year in Madison went much better. His 3-3-5 defense has looked much more incisive in the last two games and has managed to limit opponents to single-digit points.

The standout defensive players in this game included Darryl Peterson, who pressured Rutgers on almost every play, Xavier Lucas, who continued his excellent freshman year without allowing his man much, and Preston Zachman, who caught a crucial interception to keep Rutgers on To prevent advance the field.

Tressel’s defense has been among the Big Ten’s best in recent games and will continue to improve when four-star recruits Mason Posa and Nicolas Clayton arrive on campus next fall.
