Tottington: Emergency services called to house after gas leak

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) was called to a house on Bury Road in Tottington at around 4.45pm.

Three crew members from Bury, Whitefield and Ramsbottom stations were present, but the leak had already been stopped before they arrived.

Network Cadent Gas arrived and said it “appeared a stove had been switched on accidentally and there was a smell of gas”.

A GMFRS spokesman said: “Shortly before 4.45pm on Sunday October 13, three fire engines from Bury, Whitefield and Ramsbottom fire stations were called to reports of a gas leak at a house on Bury Road in Tottington.

“The leak had already been stopped before the fire department arrived.

“Crews carried out safety checks on the property before handing it over to colleagues from Cadent Gas.

“GMFRS was present for around 35 minutes.”

A spokesman for Cadent Gas said: “We were asked to come by the fire service as a precautionary measure.”

“Apparently a stove was accidentally turned on and there was a smell of gas.

“Everything has been secured and we have now left the site.”

One eyewitness said “about eight sirens flew past,” while another saw “lots of police and fire engines near the Juniper and Vine pub.”
