Charlotte’s 17-turn “Roval” course has been redesigned to give drivers additional overtaking opportunities. Changes include a longer straight line exiting Turn 5, a new Turn 6 and a sharper hairpin in Turn 7. There is also a 35-foot elevation change, among other changes.

The Cup playoff field will be reduced from 12 to eight drivers after this weekend’s race.

William Byron led Christopher Bell with 17 points and Kyle Larson with 22 points. Defending series champion Ryan Blaney sits in sixth place, 49 points behind and 25 points ahead. He is the only Ford driver in the top eight.

Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, Austin Cindric and Chase Briscoe are in the bubble below the cutline.

AJ Allmendinger won this race last year, twice leading 46 of the last 52 laps, including the last 33 after overtaking Blaney for the win.

Last week’s race at Talladega was a race for the ages as Ricky Stenhouse Jr. became the second consecutive non-playoff driver to win. That ended a 65-race drought that stretched back to last year’s Daytona 500. Stenhouse won in a three-way finish between Brad Keselowski and William Byron, whose run advanced him to the third round.

It was typical Talladega: A late-night crash killed 27 of 40 cars, including Stenhouse’s Chevy, which was missing some safety foam from the driver’s door. The race was red flagged for nine minutes, and the chaotic cleanup left some teams angry after the race over NASCAR’s handling of the accident scene. Only four active playoff drivers finished in the top 10.
