What happens if Bills’ RB James Cook can’t play against the Jets?

The Buffalo Bills have expressed confidence in their backfield backfield plan and may have to put it into action on Monday Night Football.

Primary running back James Cook injured his toe at the end of the Week 5 road loss to the Houston Texans. After missing two consecutive practices, the Bills’ RB1 participated in a limited capacity on Saturday.

Cook is officially listed as questionable for the Oct. 14 divisional affair against the New York Jets. Even though it sounds like he’s trying to get through it, he may not be able to handle the full workload.

Although the kitchen will be closed for the ailing chef on Monday, veteran Ty Johnson and newcomer Ray Davis will be available. The former will likely get a chance for revenge against his former team.

“With James not practicing this week, Ray and Ty have both had more touches on the ball so far. And I think they took advantage of those opportunities well,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said.

Johnson seems like the more reliable option at this point in the season, but Davis has some intrigue coming from his performance in college. In limited sample sizes, Johnson has an average of 4.2 yards per carry while Davis has an average of 2.9 yards per rush. Additionally, the rookie has yet to prove himself trustworthy in pass protection.

When Joe Brady took over the offensive coordinator role midway through last season, Johnson seemed to be included in the offense more often. In a Week 11 home win against the Jets, Johnson burned his old friends by making a 28-yard touchdown reception on a fourth-down play.

“The people behind him on the depth chart are great too. Confidence is still high,” said starting player Dion Dawkins.

So far, the Bills have had mixed results running the ball and ranked 14th overall in rushing offense.

With or without James Cook, the Bills appear to be a team that believes they can run the ball effectively, although that remains to be seen.
