I just tried out the knitting trend that fashion people are supporting this winter

Mornings have dipped into the single digits and the icy winds that signal the imminent arrival of winter have brought knitwear back to the forefront. Chunky sweaters, lightweight cardigans and cozy turtlenecks are in demand to add warmth to our ensembles. With all of our attention to knitwear, there’s a new trending style that’s adding a fashion-forward twist to our coziest piece of clothing. And it’s one that I recently tried myself.

From Copenhagen to London, fashionistas are turning to scarf details to add a little edge to their simple knits. As a category, knitwear isn’t often updated in the same way as other pieces, especially not in a style as timeless or as high-quality as this one. The scarf knit is exactly what it sounds like: an integration of a scarf into our beloved knitwear, just in time for the coldest months.

The scarf hybrid is nothing new in fashion circles, as scarf jackets and scarf coats have become the fashion answer in recent years when it comes to staying warm while looking chic. But it’s the first time the knit combination has gained such prominence. The best part is that it doesn’t feel like a game-changing trend that will surge this season and be forgotten come next fall. The combination has a classic, timeless appeal, meaning any piece you add, whether it’s an investment style or a high street purchase, will earn its keep for years to come.

Earlier this month I set out to explore Zara’s new collection and the first thing that caught my attention was a green scarf knit cardigan. Although a sweater and pants always go together, the addition of this one detail gives the entire look an elegant touch and makes the cardigan look even more premium. It’s a detail you’d assume would be reserved exclusively for high-designer models, making high-street finds feel even more premium. The version I tried had an over the shoulder scarf detail, but in my research I found that there are a few variations to choose from. Some extend from the collar to create the illusion of a scarf, while others feature two long strands that can be thrown behind the back. Even our knit dresses have been adorned with a scarf update, and I’ve added a few styles below.
