Witnesses respond to mass shooting near TSU that left one dead and nine injured

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – One person was killed and nine others were injured in a mass shooting Saturday evening near Tennessee State University (TSU).

Witnesses said about 100 people were gathered at the intersection of Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue when the shooting occurred.

WSMV spoke with a woman who says she ran for her life.

“I just heard a lot of gunshots. I was so close. I thought it was just fireworks, but it ended up being gunshots,” said witness Jashawna Rucker. “Everyone just ran and I started running. I almost fell. I just thank God it wasn’t me.”

People in the crowd said they heard screaming and crying as the shots were fired. More than 30 evidence markers covered the ground as police investigated the shooting.

Witnesses also told WSMV that they jumped in alongside first responders to stop the bleeding of those who had been shot.

Rucker said she was grateful her family wasn’t hurt, but she was sad because so many children were at the celebration.

Police are still investigating what led to the incident.
