What Trent Bray said after Oregon State’s loss at Nevada

After the Oregon State Beavers lost 42-37 to Nevada on Saturday night, Beavers coach Trent Bray shared his thoughts on the OSU defense, the Beavers’ turnovers, what happened in Nevada’s pick-six and more.

Here is a transcript of Bray’s interview with reporters after the game.

Q: Well, coach, it came down to the last play. Talk about the comeback, but also about the frustrating night you had.

Scream: Yes, the comeback was what these guys are. They keep fighting until the end, and they will keep fighting. And that’s exactly it. As for the frustration, you just can’t defend and win like that. Well, that’s it.

Q: Obviously you’re at the end. How much of it is injuries, how much of it is just not being in the right spot on defense?

Scream: Of course, letting a few people down doesn’t help, but I still don’t think it should look that way. And so we had to fix it.

Q: The frustration with defense is just the run defense?

Scream: The run defense. I mean, yeah, that’s the biggest frustration.

Q: As far as turnovers go, you had three big turnovers tonight.

Scream: Yes, you have to give Nevada credit. They played hard, just as we expected. They’re a good team, as we knew, and they made the plays when it counted tonight. And you have to give them credit for that.

Q: The pick-six looked like he was just staring at his reading. Have you seen that? What did you see in this piece?

Scream: I think it was a great play from the boy from Nevada. I mean, he anticipated it, he jumped it, made a great catch and then took it. Sometimes it’s just a great play by a defensive player.

Q: (Anthony) Hankerson…It’s a loss, but he gave his heart and showed some pretty good things out there.

Scream: Yes, yes, that’s no surprise to me. He’s as tough as anyone on our team and as talented as anyone on our team, and he just runs hard.

Q: What was going through your mind in terms of run defense as you came into halftime? Have the things you actually changed and it still didn’t work?

Scream: It’s hard to answer in this moment without really observing it. But it’s just a frustration across the board.

Q: Do you expect Jam (Griffin) to miss multiple games? Or what is his status in the future?

Scream: Not something I’m going to talk about now.

Q: (Andy) Alfieri is now playing the ball on both sides. He had a lot of chances in defense tonight.

Scream: That’s what he did, and he’ll continue to get more.

Q: What does a loss like this mean for the season in the long term?

Scream: Nothing as far as we can control it. We have to find a way to recover, come back and win the rest of our games. That’s all we can control.

Q: You got that nice onside kick but couldn’t take advantage of it. That was hard.

Scream: Yes, it was well executed, the ball came into midfield at a crucial moment, and yes, it was unfortunate.

Q: Are you at all worried about the team’s psyche after a game like this?

Scream: That’s not me, that’s not me. These guys are winners, they are competitors. I’m not worried about that.
