What BYU sports reporters remember about the 1984 BYU championship – Deseret News

Four decades ago, in 1984, Brigham Young University completed a remarkable march to the national football championship. It was the year that BYU football was indeed unmatched.

“The 1984 team was lucky, I think, because they weren’t expected to do it,” said Lee Benson, a longtime sportswriter and Deseret News columnist.

“Looking back, this season and the foundation it laid is significant today,” said Dick Harmon, also a sportswriter and Deseret News columnist. “I think it’s all of those things [BYU Head Coach LaVell Edwards] The resume that was built led to a resume that made it to the Big 12,” Harmon said.

“Mark Bellini, one of the receivers, told me that the relationship with his guys far surpasses the trophy they won after all these years,” McCann said.
