Louisville manages to pick up the first down and that’ll end the game. Virginia falls to Louisville 24-20 for its first ACC loss of the season.

Louisville 24, Virginia 20 | Final

Colandrea hits the freshman Kam Courtney on back-to-back plays for a pair of eight-yard completions. He then finds Malachi Fields for eight yards and then Andre Greene Jr. for 12 yards to move the ball to the Louisville 39-yard line. Colandrea targets Fields on three-consecutive plays and each time it falls incomplete. On 4th and 10, Colandrea is pressured and tries to find Tyler Neville at the sticks, but D’Angelo Hutchinson breaks up the pass to force a turnover on downs. It looked like Hutchinson had a fistful of the back of Neville’s jersey but no penalty is called. Louisville takes over with 48 seconds remaining. Virginia can use all three of its timeouts to get the ball back if Louisville doesn’t pick up a first down, but even then it’ll be tough for UVA to drive the length of the field with probably less than 30 seconds remaining.

Out of the timeout, Tyler Shough fakes the handoff and rolls out to his right and finds a wide-open Jamari Johnson in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Louisville regains the lead with an 11-play, 67 yard scoring drive. UVA will get the ball back down four points with all three timeouts and a little under two minutes left on the clock.

Louisville 24, Virginia 20 | 1:55 4Q

Shough completes an 18-yard pass to Caullin Lacy and then finds Lacy again a few plays later to move the chains on third down. Isaac Brown gets the carry and finds a hole between the tackles for an 18-yard gain. Shough then finds Jamari Johnson on a short pass and Johnson runs for 14 yards to the UVA 8-yard line and a fresh set of downs. Duke Watson runs for three yards to the UVA 5-yard line and that’ll take us down to the two-minute timeout. Virginia has all three of its timeouts and Louisville has two timeouts.

Louisville 17, Virginia 20 | 2:00 4Q

Working under the shadow of their own goal post, the Cavaliers fail to pick up a first down and go three-and-out. Colandrea makes a crafty pass to find Kobe Pace, but it comes back for an ineligible man downfield penalty. Sparks gets the punt off from the back of the UVA end zone and it’s a good one, going 56 yards across midfield. Ahmari Huggins-Bruce fumbles the ball for a moment and is tackled for a loss of eight yards on the return, so Louisville starts its drive at the 33-yard line. That’s a huge plus play for the UVA special teams.

Louisville 17, Virginia 20 | 6:33 4Q

Shough hits Chris Bell on a deep ball for 45 yards on the first play of Louisville’s drive. Three plays later, it’s 3rd and 13 (following a great TFL by James Jackson) and Shough tries another deep ball and this time it’s intercepted by true freshman safety Ethan Minter, who makes an incredible play to outjump everybody for the ball near the UVA goal line.

Louisville 17, Virginia 20 | 8:25 4Q

On the first play of Virginia’s possession, Colandrea finds Kam Courtney on the sideline for a 27-yard gain to midfield. Colandrea hits Fields again for a short gain and he’s tackled just shy of the marker. A false start backs Virginia up to a 3rd and 6 and Louisville brings a blitz to flush Colandrea out of the pocket, but UVA has a perfect play-call and Colandrea hits Xavier Brown on a wheel route and he takes it down the sideline 46 yards for a touchdown. UVA retakes the lead.

Louisville 17, Virginia 20 | 10:03 4Q

A 19-yard run for Isaac Brown and a 22-yard pass from Tyler Shough to Mark Redman set up Louisville inside the UVA 20, but the Cavaliers come up with a huge stop as Chico Bennett Jr. tackles Brown for a loss and then Kam Robinson sacks Shough on third down to force a field goal attempt. Travelstead pushes his 41-yard attempt wide right and the score remains 17-13.

Louisville 17, Virginia 13 | 11:47 4Q

Malachi Fields is having himself a game. He catches passes from Colandrea for nine and 14 yards to move the chains and then throws the ball on a trick play to Tyler Neville, who makes a diving catch at the Louisville 10-yard line. But once again, Virginia can’t punch it in for the touchdown and has to settle for a 23-yard field goal from Will Bettridge to make it 17-13.

Louisville 17, Virginia 13 | 1:00 3Q

Louisville is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for the second time today and the UVA defense capitalizes, forcing the Cardinals into a three-and-out. UVA gets the ball back immediately with a chance to tie.

Louisville 17, Virginia 10 | 4:26 3Q

Virginia responds with a key scoring drive. Colandrea finds Kam Courtney on a slant to move the chains on 3rd and 5 and then he makes a great throw on the run to find Malachi Fields for 23 yards on 3rd and 14. Colandrea hits Fields again a few plays later, this time for 24 yards into the Louisville red zone. Once again, UVA struggles to convert in the red zone and the drive stalls there. Will Bettridge comes on and hits the 31-yard field goal to get the Cavaliers back within one possession.

Louisville 17, Virginia 10 | 5:26 3Q

Colandrea moves the chains with a 13-yard option keeper and then Noah Vaughn picks up five yards, but Colandrea’s third down pass is too high for Fields and Virginia is forced to punt. Daniel Sparks hits another low line drive punt and this time it doesn’t get past the line of scrimmage, then gets hurt trying to recover it. He eventually walks off the field, but Louisville will have the ball on the UVA 14-yard line with a chance to extend its lead to two possessions with a touchdown. Virginia has been better on special teams this season, but this was a bad time for a relapse.

It takes the Cardinals just one play to cash in on the special teams miscue, as Isaac Brown takes the carry to the left side and runs in for a 14-yard touchdown.

Louisville 17, Virginia 7 | 10:40 3Q

Louisville opens the second half with a scoring drive to take its first lead of the game. On the second play of the drive, Shough throws a short pass to Ja’Corey Brooks, who breaks free down the right sideline for a 61-yard gain inside the Virginia red zone. The UVA defense makes a stand after that, assisted by a Louisville holding penalty, and the Cardinals settle for a 31-yard field goal from Brock Travelstead.

Louisville 10, Virginia 7 | 12:38 3Q

Anthony Colandrea misses Kobe Pace on a wheel route and then is tackled for a one-yard loss on each of the next two plays. Virginia goes three-and-out and punts the ball back to Louisville with 29 seconds remaining. UVA does a great job on punt coverage, so the Cards take over at their own seven-yard line and kneel out the rest of the clock. We go to halftime tied at 7-7 and Louisville will have the ball to start the second half.

Louisville 7, Virginia 7 | Halftime

On 3rd and 3, Shough finds Ja’Corey Brooks on a slant and he is tackled by Kam Robinson right at the line to gain. He’s ruled short and a replay review upholds that call. Louisville goes three-and-out and Virginia gets the ball back with 57 seconds left near midfield.

Louisville 7, Virginia 7 | 0:57 2Q

Virginia returns to what was working earlier in the game and starts to have success running the ball. Colandrea keeps it himself and dances outside for a 15-yard gain, then Brown picks up eight yards on the next play. Pace churns for five yards to move the chains on 3rd and 2, but McKale Boley is injured on the play. Colandrea takes a hit on a deep ball and Tony Muskett comes in for one play, handing the ball off to Pace for a nine-yard gain. Colandrea returns and rushes on the next play for three yards on third down to move the chains. A holding penalty on Brian Stevens sets UVA back to 2nd and 20, but Virginia is able to keep the drive going thanks to a 13-yard completion from Colandrea to Fields on 3rd and 13. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Louisville gives Virginia 1st and goal from the 6, but Louisville’s Stanquan Clark blows up UVA’s jet sweep to Kam Courtney and tackles him for a seven-yard loss. Tony Elliott decides to go for it on 4th and goal from the 3 and Colandrea’s pass intended for Kam Courtney never had a chance, though it did seem like he was tackled before the ball arrived. UVA comes up empty and turns the ball over downs, keeping this game tied at 7-7.

Louisville 7, Virginia 7 | 2:24 2Q

Louisville drives down the field with ease and gets on the board. Shough completes a 21-yard pass to Caullin Lacy and then Isaac Brown gets loose for runs of 12 and 23 yards. Brown gets the carry again and reaches the end zone untouched for a seven-yard touchdown. It’s a six-play, 72-yard drive for the Cardinals to tie the game.

Louisville 7, Virginia 7 | 10:59 2Q

Virginia runs the ball on 3rd and 7 and Xavier Brown is tackled for no gain. Some conservative play-calling results in a three-and-out for the Cavaliers when they had very advantageous field position. It’s uncertain if the line-drive punt from Daniel Sparks hit a Louisville player or not, but UVA failed to recover it anyway, so Louisville will take over at the 28-yard line after a punt from Sparks that went just 21 yards.

Louisville 0, Virginia 7 | 13:15 2Q

Penalties have been heavily in favor of Virginia so far. Louisville has been called for four penalties totaling 20 yards, including two on this drive that results in a three-and-out for the Cardinals. Ethan Davies returns the punt nine yards out near midfield, where Colandrea and company will take over.

Louisville 0, Virginia 7 | 14:41 1Q

Malachi Fields makes a great catch and gets loose down the right sideline for a 28-yard gain. Colandrea and Xavier Brown rush for five and six yards to move the chains, but then the drive stalls near midfield as Colandrea is sacked by Ashton Gillotte on third down, so Virginia punts it away to Louisville, who will take over at its own 14-yard line.

Louisville 0, Virginia 7 | 1:13 1Q

A 19-yard run from Isaac Brown gets Louisville out to midfield. Tyler Shough completes a pass to Chris Bell on 3rd and 9 for 13 yards and a first down. Shough scrambles on 3rd and 10 and picks up another first down inside the UVA red zone. After a review, the officials determine that Shough was short of the line to gain, and on 4th and 1, Shough hands off to Brown, who is tripped up in the backfield by Kam Robinson and brought down short of the first down. It’s a huge stand for the UVA defense and a turnover on downs, giving possession back to Virginia.

Louisville 0, Virginia 7 | 4:52 1Q

Kobe Pace rushes for nine yards and then Anthony Colandrea calls his own number on back-to-back plays, rushing for 18 yards and 13 yards to get into Louisville territory. Colandrea connects with Tyler Neville for19 yards down into the red zone, which has been area of struggle for the Cavaliers recently. Virginia gets a fresh set of downs at the Louisville 6-yard line and it takes four tries, but UVA eventually punches it in for a big touchdown thanks to a Grady Brosterhous QB sneak on 4th and goal from the 1. Virginia throws the first punch with an 11-play, 75-yard drive.

Louisville 0, Virginia 7 | 9:39 1Q
