Will Roman Wilson finally play in Week 6? Latest update on Steelers rookie

One of the bigger question marks for the Pittsburgh Steelers lately has been the status of rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson, who has yet to play in a game this season.

Wilson suffered an ankle injury during training camp that sidelined him for the entire preseason. But Wilson was finally healthy a few weeks into the season, but the Steelers didn’t draft him.

Head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith both essentially said that Wilson needed more time to get into football shape and develop before taking the field.

“And specifically as far as Roman is concerned, he got injured on the sixth play of the first practice (in pads) of training camp,” Tomlin said. “And so there are some developmental aspects, there are some physical games, conditioning and learning and things that go into his process that don’t reflect the overall process. Roman doesn’t have a lot of experience in the helmet. “He’s healthy, but he still has a lot of work to do to be ready to play.”

Well, Wilson has apparently fulfilled all the requirements he needs to fulfill to finally be able to play.

Will Roman Wilson play in Week 6?

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the 2024 third-round pick and Michigan product is expected to be active and make his debut in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“Steelers rookie wideout Roman Wilson is expected to be active Sunday and make his NFL debut against the Raiders, according to sources,” Fowler wrote. “After an ankle injury slowed his start to the year, Wilson gives the Steelers passing game another option.”

It was at least somewhat surprising that Wilson had not been active up to this point. We get it, he missed a lot of time, but the Steelers are also severely lacking in talent at the wide receiver position.

It remains to be seen what role Wilson will play from the start, but we can’t imagine it will play such a big role in his first game. However, if he’s able to create even a semblance of a spark, it won’t be long before he’s more involved.
