Serious crime and traffic crime decreased; Hate crimes are on the rise

The NYPD released citywide crime statistics for the nine months ending September 30, 2024. The report shows declines in four of the seven major crime categories compared to the same period in 2023. Homicide cases fell 11.2%, including burglary and aggravated Theft and Grand Larceny Auto also saw declines. According to the published data, rapes, robberies and crimes increased by 14.4%, 1.4% and 5.6%, respectively.

The charts below show nine-month results for hate and transit crimes in addition to the seven major crime categories. The report said there have been over 4,100 marches, protests and demonstrations across the city since Hamas’ October 7 attack and Israel’s response. According to the report, there was a 30% increase in bias incidents citywide, driven by a 74% increase in anti-Jewish incidents and a 338% increase in anti-Muslim incidents. Upper West Side precincts reported a 25% increase in hate crimes, but did not provide a breakdown of the motivation for the crime.

According to the report, the decline in public transit incidents across the city is due to the NYPD’s “ongoing prevention strategy.” [transit] Fight crime and give passengers security.”

Upper West Side Statistics

Statistics for the nine-month period ending Sept. 29 for the 20th, 24th and Central Park wards, which include the Upper West Side, also show declines in four of the seven serious crime categories, a decline of 1.6%. Rapes, robberies and grand larcenies increased by 5.6%, 24.6% and 4.3%, respectively. No murders were reported during this period. We have re-included data on hate and transit crimes. Hate crimes on the Upper West Side rose to 30 from 24 during the same period last year. However, in contrast to the citywide decline, traffic accidents on the UWS rose 27.3% from 33 to 42.

Notably, the 24th District reported a 63.6% increase in hate crimes and a 50% increase in transit crimes, while the Central Park District reported a 111.8% increase in robberies (from 17 to 36) and an increase by 57.1% reported criminal assaults (from 7 to 11 incidents).
