Rings Of Power has been dethroned by a new show on Amazon Prime Video’s top 10 list

I was wondering how long it would take after the Season 2 finale for Rings of Power to slip from No. 1 on Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 list, and the answer is a little over a week. Not bad, I guess. What replaced it? Actually something quite unexpected.

That would be… Citadel? Yes, Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra’s spy show that debuted in April 2023. Here, over a year later, she’s back at number 1. What’s going on?

Well, the answer here, which is still strange, is that Citadel: Diana was just released, an expansion of the “Citadel Universe” that spun off from the English language show, but now Diana is an Italian expansion. And an Indian expansion, Citadel: Honey Bunny, will be released next month. So I guess the idea here is that Citadel: Diana sparked interest in the original series, even though Diana is #2 and the original is #1. This all still really surprises me, as you wouldn’t expect a series without a new season to rise to #1 after more than a year, let alone… Citadel, which wasn’t particularly well received upon release.

Diana Citadel Is However, it is better received than the original. It has a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes (no audience score yet), while the first Citadel had a 51% critic score and a mediocre audience score of 63%. Not ideal for one of the most expensive series of all time.

But Amazon continues with this. Citadel is getting a second season and there are at least these two spin-offs. I think this recent result might suggest that maybe they’ve done the right thing, and if they can keep the costs down (the first one was said to have cost $300, mostly because of so many reshoots), maybe it can be a successful one after all Become a franchise.

Rings of Power has suddenly dropped to #3 and still hasn’t been renewed for a third season, although again it seems like a given given the investment Amazon has made in the series. And they boasted some solid attendance last season.

The Legend of Vox Machina, a 100% rated series, is at #4, which I would consider pretty good for a fairly niche animated series. These include offerings such as Tulsa King, Special Ops: Lioness, Judy Justice and some sports series.

So, Citadel? Yes, Citadel, and we may be seeing a lot more of it if it can maintain this surprising level of newfound interest.
