Former head coach says Texas A&M Aggies are in ‘driver’s seat’ for SEC title

Texas A&M Aggies fans are trying to avoid jinxing their team by ignoring the hype, but a five-game winning streak and a 3-0 start to SEC play make it almost impossible not to think briefly about their hopes for the to speak conference title.

College Football Hall of Fame member Steve Spurriers joins the discussion now. The former South Carolina and Florida head coach expressed confidence in Texas A&M’s SEC title chances during an appearance on the website Another well-known Dooley podcast.

“There could be a championship game where both teams have at least one loss, I would guess,” Spurrier said, according to On3. “Texas A&M, in my opinion, is kind of ahead in the conference right now with no losses. Almost everyone has one now.”

Texas A&M’s remaining schedule for the rest of the season certainly gives the team a real chance to make it to the SEC Championship and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff, even if another loss is possible at some point. The Aggies’ toughest remaining games against the LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns are both in College Station, while the final three road games against Mississippi State (October 19), South Carolina (November 2) and Auburn (November 23) are matchups , which favor Texas A&M.

According to ESPN’s College Football Playoff Predictor, the Aggies currently have a 33 percent chance of making the CFP, which ranks 15th nationally.

If Texas A&M can handle business to the end and a second potential loss comes at the hands of either Texas or LSU, the Aggies have a real chance of making it to the SEC title game. Even if Texas A&M loses in the conference championship, the first CFP berth in program history will be within sight.

No. 15 Texas A&M will exit the bye week and face Mississippi State on Oct. 19.
