Will Texas QB play against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry today?

Will Quinn Ewers return to Texas football ahead of Saturday’s Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma?

All signs this week point to Ewers returning to the lineup after suffering an oblique strain in the Longhorns’ 56-7 win over UTSA on Sept. 14. Ewers missed the last two games in which redshirt freshman Arch Manning started.

On Monday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Ewers returned to practice last week during Texas’ bye week. Although he didn’t directly name Ewers as the starter for the game, Sarkisian hinted that Ewers would be the starter. This was confirmed again by Sarkisian on Thursday.

Before his injury, Ewers completed 58 of 79 passes (73%) for 691 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Manning completed 41 of 60 passes (68%) in his two starts for 583 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions, both wins at Texas.

Quinn Ewers injury update

On Thursday afternoon, Sarkisian announced that Ewers would return to the Longhorns’ starting lineup against Oklahoma.

Ewers was listed as “probable” in Texas’ initial student-athlete availability report Wednesday, indicating he is close to returning to the field since his Sept. 14 injury. Sarkisian seemed confident he would have his starter back at the start of the season.

As a sophomore, Ewers completed 272 of 394 passes (69%) for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. With Texas ranked No. 1 in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 poll and a serious contender for the College Football Playoff national championship, it’s likely that Sarkisian will opt for the quarterback with more experience .

“If we had to play today, sure,” Sarkisian said on Monday. “I want to see how he responds to extended work and what that looks like to make sure he’s as healthy as possible.”
