Home surveillance video shows a carjacking in front of the victim’s home

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – 19 News has obtained new home surveillance video that captures a carjacking from a vehicle on West 95th Street Wednesday morning.

“Why? Why do they do this to people?” said victim Michael De La Rosa; he becomes the latest victim of the stolen Hyundai and Kia Trend.

The 2011 West Boulevard neighborhood man’s Sonata parked right in front of his house and noticed it was gone just before 7 a.m. as he was getting ready for work.

“To be honest, not having a car is everything to me,” he said.

De La Rosa spent the morning and afternoon going door to door asking neighbors if they had seen anything. No one witnessed the theft, but they shared surveillance camera footage with him.

In one clip, a group of people jump out of an SUV, look around to make sure no one is watching, and take De La Rosa’s car without the keys.

“I fell over,” De La Rosa said, describing the moment he saw the footage. “I didn’t feel worse than ever, especially because I don’t want to lose my job.”

The theft not only causes problems for De La Rosa personally, but also for his family, who rely heavily on his help.

“My mom just had eye surgery and I’m the one who always takes her to appointments,” he said. “So if I don’t have a car to do anything, I can’t help her.”

Although De La Rosa can’t identify who the perpetrators were, he hopes police can use the surrounding surveillance cameras to find out.

He pointed out that Mercedes Cotner Park is an area with surveillance cameras: “I would love for everyone to see if they can track him down.”

19 News reached out to Cleveland Police for more information on the carjacking, but no one was available for an interview.

For now, De La Rosa has to figure out what happens next.

“I’m going to make sure I lock the car with everything I can find so this can’t happen again,” he said.
