Who will the Mets play next? Explains New York’s NLCS opponents in the 2024 MLB playoff round

For the first time since 2015, the Mets are going to the NLCS.

New York secured its spot in the National League Championship Series with a Game 4 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The Mets defeated the Phillies 4-1 thanks to a grand slam from star shortstop Francisco Lindor and beat their NL East rivals in four games of the best-of-five series.

By June, the Mets were among the worst teams in baseball, falling 11 games below .500 and in danger of losing the season. However, a strong second half helped New York clinch a postseason berth and a No. 5 seed in the NL.

Pete Alonso got the Mets into the NLDS by defeating the Brewers in Game 3 of the wild-card round, setting up a divisional duel with the Phillies. After splitting the first two games, New York won the next two games in Queens, moving even closer to a shot at the World Series.

But who is next for the Mets? The Sporting News announces New York’s opponents for the NLCS.

Who will the Mets play next?

After winning Game 4 on Wednesday night, the Mets eliminated the Phillies and advanced to the NLCS. After defeating the Padres in Game 5 of their division series matchup, the Dodgers also advanced to the next round, setting up a matchup between New York and Los Angeles.

New York had to wait before finding out its NLCS opponent, as the Dodgers needed a decisive fifth game to knock off the Padres. But now the Mets face a duel with baseball’s best team in the regular season, and a place in the World Series is at stake.

The Mets lost 4-2 to the Dodgers in the regular season. Los Angeles posted a 98-64 record and won the NL West for the third straight year and 11th time in the last 12 years.

When does the NLCS start?

Game 1 of the NLCS between the Mets and Dodgers will take place on Sunday, October 13th. As the higher seed, Los Angeles will host Games 1 and 2.

Since the Mets only needed four games to beat the Phillies, New York gets three days off before the next round begins, giving Carlos Mendoza a chance to rest his bullpen and reset his starting rotation.
