The strong first half brings Pieper to a 56:37 victory over the Seguin Matadors

(Seguin) – The No. 8-ranked Pieper Warriors scored the first seven touchdowns of the night and defeated the Seguin Matadors 56-37 in a 2-0 battle of the teams in District 13-5A at Matador Stadium on Friday night.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard first by going 94 yards on the game’s opening drive. Senior quarterback Cayden Keeth capped the drive with a 53-yard run to give Pieper a 7-0 lead. The Warriors got a surprise onside kick after the touchdown and scored just a few seconds later when running back Brady Hopper found the end zone from 16 yards out to make it 14-0.

Pieper forced a Matador turnover on downs and scored his third touchdown with about two minutes left in the first quarter when Keeth hit Isaiah Champagne for a 20-yard score. Keeth threw three more touchdowns in the second quarter and running back John Hamilton scored a big score to give the Warriors a 49-0 lead with just under a minute left in the half.

The Matadors scored their first 10 seconds before halftime when quarterback Corey Dailey hit receiver Ayden Avila for an 11-yard scoring strike to make the score, 49-6 Pieper at halftime. Dailey continued to play the hot hand in the second half, setting up two goals from Lane Seidenberger in the third quarter. The junior signal-caller connected with receiver Nik Henry for three touchdowns in the fourth, the last of which ultimately brought the Mats within 20 points of the Warriors.

Overall, Dailey completed 36 of 50 passes for 373 yards and six touchdowns. The three-year Matador starter has scored 13 touchdowns in the last two games. In the first quarter, Dailey surpassed 5,000 career passing yards. Henry caught 14 passes for 153 yards on the night. Seidenberger finished the game with six receptions for 73 yards. Avila had four catches for 57 yards. Running back Ian Moreno had 81 yards of total offense on the night.

Seguin’s tough district schedule continues next week when they head to Smithson Valley. Both teams are 2-1 in district play after the Rangers defeated Wagner 30-8 on Friday night at Smithson Valley High School.

In other district games, New Braunfels improved to 3-0 with a 49-34 home win over Boerne Champion. And Victoria East earned its first district win with a 36-0 shutout win at San Antonio MacArthur.

In other Friday night Area games:

Navarro picked up its first District 13-4A win of the season, while Jarrell handed Geronimo its first district loss with a 35-14 victory.

And Marion improved to 2-0 in District 13-3A by defeating Randolph 35-28 in Marion.
