Columbus Day is celebrated on Monday when the bond market (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) remains closed while the stock market remains open.

The third quarter earnings season continues in full force, with major banks such as Morgan Stanley (MS), Citigroup (C) and Bank of America (BAC) set to release their reports. Industry giants such as Netflix (NFLX), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), UnitedHealth (UNH) and ASML Holding (ASML) will also report quarterly results.

Retail sales for September will be released on Thursday, offering new insight into consumer behavior. Economists expect a reading of 0.3%, up from 0.1% in August. The housing market will be in focus next Friday with the release of data on builder confidence and housing starts and building permits.

Investors can expect further comments from Federal Reserve officials, with Fed Governor Christopher Waller and Fed Governor Adriana Kugler scheduled to speak. Her remarks are likely to provide additional insight into the central bank’s monetary policy outlook.
