ESPN’s “First Take” highlights HBCU culture while attending Tennessee State University

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The national spotlight was on Tennessee State University Friday after ESPN hosted its flagship morning sports show “First Take” on campus.

Hundreds of people filled the outdoor area to watch sports stars Stephen A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Cam Newton debate the hottest sports topics.

“First Take” is seen by millions of people worldwide, which many viewers believe provides good visibility for the university.

“It is nothing short of a national spotlight for Tennessee State University, one of the largest HBCUs in the country,” said alumni Debora Lanier-Benberry. “I’m proud; I’m so glad I went to TSU.”

The “Coming Campus” show is part of a larger initiative by them to highlight historically black colleges and universities across the country.

“A lot of people don’t understand the culture and how special it is to the people who go to school at an HBCU and what it means to them,” said “First Take” guest host Cristina Alexander.

For two hours, Smith and the former NFL superstars discussed the importance of HBCUs and their traditions.

They’re conversations that many viewers hope will resonate with those who tuned in from across the country.

“When they see that on TV, they think, ‘Wow, everyone is excited, look at this energy, look at this community, I see people that look like me, I can go there and fit in here, I “Feel welcome,” said alumni Scott Richardson.
