CNN on Friday avoided asking Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer about the bizarre viral video of her feeding a left-wing influencer a Dorito.

Whitmer appeared on CNN to address former President Trump’s critical comments about Detroit during his speech in the city this week, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and to ask questions about how she differs from President Biden.

But CNN’s Kate Bolduan did not bring up an unusual clip of Whitmer’s internet and media rounds that a CNN panel had mocked the night before.

Liberal journalist Liz Plank posted a video this week of Whitmer feeding her a Doritos chip. The camera then pans to Whitmer, wearing a Harris Walz camouflage hat, staring at the camera and nodding while a cover of the song “Dilemma” plays in the background. It was part of a viral trend on TikTok with people feeding each other.

It’s unclear why this is popular.

Plank’s kneeling pose sparked criticism that Whitmer intentionally or unintentionally mocked Holy Communion recipients with the video, with comments that it was strange and disgusting.

“If he doesn’t do it, Gretchen Whitmer will,” reads a caption under Plank’s Instagram video post. “Not only are chips delicious, the CHIPS Act fundamentally changes technology and manufacturing in the U.S. by boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would jeopardize that.” The video promoted an interview Plank conducted with Whitmer, who is often touted by Democrats as a contender for national office as swing state governor.

A political adviser to Whitmer responded to a request for comment Fox News Digital“The governor’s social media is known for infusing her communications with pop culture.”

The adviser added: “This popular trend has been used by countless people, including Billie Eilish, Kylie Jenner and Stephen Colbert, and the fact that people are paying attention to a video promoting President Biden’s CHIPS law proves that it works. Republicans want to distract from the fact that Democrats have invested billions of dollars in the local economy to create record numbers of jobs and bring supply chains back from overseas, while Donald Trump’s policies would destroy those jobs and send them back to China.

Conservatives widely mocked the video, with some claiming it was a mockery of Christians. Plank responded that “crazy people” should “relax,” noting that it was part of a viral trend that had nothing to do with Christianity.

CNN discussed the video Thursday evening, with former Trump 2020 campaign official Marc Lotter mentioning it at the end of CNN NewsNight.

As the video of Whitmer and the woman played, an incredulous Lotter urged politicians, regardless of their affiliation, not to try to look “cool and young.”

“It’s scary,” he said.

CNN anchor Abby Phillip added: “It’s a little embarrassing. Can we agree on this?”
