Trump launches campaign in Colorado amid false gang claims and anti-immigrant rhetoric: live updates

Trump denigrates Detroit in a speech to the city’s business leaders

Donald Trump will hold an immigration rally on Friday in Aurora, Colorado, where local officials have rejected his claim that the Denver suburb is a “war zone” taken over by Venezuelan gangs.

In announcing the rally, the Trump campaign said: “Aurora, Colorado has become a ‘war zone’ due to the influx of violent Venezuelan prison gang members from Tren de Aragua.”

During the Sept. 10 debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump said, “They’re taking over the cities. They take over buildings. They force their way in.”

The rally comes after Trump disparaged the entire city of Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday and warned that the entire country, like the Motor City, could descend into “chaos” if his Democratic rival wins the November election, which has already faced a major backlash triggered.

Former President Barack Obama, meanwhile, gave an impassioned speech during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, denouncing the Republican’s character and mocking his “constant attempts to sell you things,” from gold sneakers to branded Bibles and himself supported Harris’ candidacy for the presidency.

Trump’s campaign team is using mugshots of gang members as a backdrop for an event in Colorado

The Trump campaign is using mugshots of gang members arrested in Aurora as a backdrop for his speech in the city Friday afternoon.

According to TND, Jose Miguel Reyes-Perez and Juan Carlos Mejia-Espana were two of 10 members identified by the Aurora Police Department last month. Their mugshots were on display Friday on the stage behind Trump’s podium.

Police said they arrested Reyes-Perez earlier this year on charges of aggravated assault, menacing and vehicle theft.

Meija-Espana was arrested following an alleged domestic dispute over a gun.

The polls are clear: Kamala Harris’ honeymoon is over

Where will the 2024 election be decided?

Donald Trump is on the rise. A new Quinnipiac poll in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan this week showed him leading in the latter two; The RealClearPolitics polling average now has him ahead for the first time in months in the state of Michigan, a state that rejected Hillary Clinton in 2016 but flipped back to Democratic control in 2020.

But what’s really clear – what the Quinnipiac poll and every other poll on the race shows this week – is how close the race is in every state. No candidate has a lead larger than the low single digits in more than half a dozen states, and all will play an important role in the Electoral College.

Maryland’s Senate race was friendly — until it really, really wasn’t

It was a mood that lasted about thirty seconds.

Just moments into the debate on Maryland Public Television (MPT), moderated by NBC’s Chuck Todd, the two candidates had abandoned their friendliness and exchanged accusations of dishonesty. That’s not only a sign of how passionate politics is in 2024, but also what’s at stake in Maryland, where Hogan’s candidacy turned a once-safe Democratic U.S. Senate seat into a real one for the first time in many years competition.

Trump’s top general calls ex-president “through-and-through fascist” and “most dangerous person for this country,” a new book says

Mark Milley, the US Army general whom Donald Trump appointed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, now says the current Republican presidential candidate is “a fascist through and through” and says no man has ever posed a greater danger to the United States States as the man who served as the 45th President of the United States.

Milley, a decorated military officer who became a target of right-wing scorn after it emerged that he had raised concerns about Trump’s mental stability following his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden, is profiled by journalist Bob Woodward in his new book: War, equally incredibly concerned about the prospect of a second Trump term in the White House. The Independent I received a copy before the book’s release date of October 15th.

Woodward writes that after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a riotous mob of supporters of the then-president, Milley insisted on arranging a meeting with then-freshman Attorney General Merrick Garland to pressure him to investigate domestic violent extremism and far-right militia movements.

Trump, who is lagging far behind with women, lashes out at “The View” host in his latest tirade

And as the former president struggles to heal his self-inflicted wounds, Harris has laid out a vigorous campaign plan. The vice president has held several rallies and smaller events and has also gone on an interview tour to reach a broader audience. Trump also stays on track and has several events in his weekly calendar.

However, as the former president plays to crowds of supporters at his rallies, he clearly has the larger audience that Harris reaches with his performances in mind 60 minutes, The view and even the Spotify podcast Call her dad.

On Wednesday, at a rally in Pennsylvania, he highlighted some of his opponent’s media tours on stage and played a clip of Harris’ interview with him The view. Sunny Hostin, who asked Harris what she would have done differently than Joe Biden over the past four years if she had been president, became the butt of ridicule.

Trump expects to go on an anti-immigrant tirade during the Colorado rally

Donald Trump is expected to go on an anti-immigrant tirade during his visit to Aurora, Colorado, for a rally on Friday.

The Republican claimed the Denver suburb had been overrun by immigrants, turning it into a “war zone” – suggestions rejected by local officials.

“Aurora, Colorado has become a ‘war zone’ due to the influx of violent Venezuelan prison gang members from Tren de Aragua,” the Trump campaign said in a statement announcing the rally.

During the Sept. 10 debate, Trump said that members of the Tren de Aragua had taken control of a number of apartment buildings in the suburb – claims that were denied by city leaders.

“They’re taking over the cities. They take over buildings. They are using violence,” Trump said at the time. “These are the people that she and Biden let into our country.”

The rally is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center.
