Live Updates: The latest on the 2024 presidential campaign

Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Detroit, Michigan, where she will participate in a radio town hall hosted by comedian, attorney and nationally syndicated radio co-host Charlamagne tha God Tuesday, at an event titled “We the People,” the host announced this morning on “The Breakfast Club,” where he fielded questions from listeners ahead of the event.

Democrats are expressing deep concern about the increasing gains Republicans are making among Black men and Harris’ efforts to restore the multiracial coalition that partly led to President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020.

The popular host, also known as Lenard McKelvey, has millions of followers across digital platforms and The Breakfast Club reportedly has an estimated 8 million monthly listeners, more than half of whom are Black.

During the hour-long conversation, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET, Harris will answer questions from callers from all battleground states. An estimated 139 radio stations in markets across the country will receive the program, in addition to multiple digital streams and the iHeartRadio app.

Harris will focus in part on the economy, addressing and identifying barriers to creating intergenerational wealth for Black Americans, a senior Harris campaign official tells CNN.

The campaign’s decision to partner with “The Breakfast Club” host, who has expressed support for Harris, is part of a broader strategy to reach voters on non-traditional platforms and through influencers to reach consumers who do not get their information from the mainstream media.

In a surprise appearance Thursday at a Harris campaign office in Pittsburgh, former President Barack Obama lamented what he described as a lack of energy among black men that “seems to be more pronounced among the brothers,” he said.

Leading up to the major event, the Harris-Walz campaign will host a series of virtual and in-person voter activation events targeting Black voters in the key battleground states of Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Last week in Flint, Michigan, NBA star Magic Johnson expressed a similar opinion.

“We have to get our black men to vote, that’s the most important thing. Kamala’s opponent promised the black community a lot of things last time that he didn’t keep, and we need to make sure we help black men understand that,” Johnson said.

Tomorrow, entertainers Jermaine Dupri, Armani White and Isaac Hayes III will host “Brothas and Brews” in Atlanta to connect with black men.

And on Saturday, tailgates will be held at Lincoln University in Philadelphia and Fort Valley State University in Georgia as part of the campaign’s HBCU Homecoming Tour.
