What I want to see in a music video is something that makes me smile or laugh. Now don’t get me wrong. Live performance videos are entertaining. Narrative videos can be clever, but they can also be a headache if the text doesn’t fit the plot. Concept videos are just too confusing because the lyrics have little to nothing to do with the action. Animated videos are the most original, but all too often it feels like you’re watching an endless loop “Magical Mystery Tour.”

When I just lounge on the couch and watch an episode of “Only murders in the building” And “Gutfeld!” Sometimes I check the inbox to see what’s new in the world of music videos. One that caught my eye recently was shot for the song “Tarzan” by Mean Mary from her upcoming year “Female Creature (Portrait of a Woman, Part 2)” album, the follow-up to her dazzling 2022 album, “Portrait of a Woman, Pt. 1.”

This video makes you want to grab a vine and swing from treetop to treetop to the sounds of jungle/bluegrass banjo. You’ll see Mary in a leopard-print dress and hat, her fingers flying across the fretboard of her banjo, sounding the clarion call (Ungawa!) to all the monkeys, elephants and other wildlife nearby. It almost makes you want to see the jungle itself, which sounds exciting provided you don’t mind the heat, humidity, mold, mildew, poisonous snakes, and predatory 400-pound leopards with teeth like steak knives.

You will hear Mary’s iconic Tarzan call, which is pretty close to Johnny Weissmüller’s plaintive scream – Taaar-maan-ganiii! Her brother Frank James tunes in to jungle animal sounds, similar to those heard by Paul Simon “Graceland” or The Tokens’ hit single from 1961, “The lion sleeps tonight.” oh Wimoweh, oh Wimoweh.

Don’t miss Mary’s wild, entertaining and totally original music video. This exciting visual adventure captures the spirit of the song perfectly and you can tell Mary had a lot of fun writing it. But someone needs to inform her that there is no way she can keep Cheetah and Tantor in the backyard, and that the 20-foot-long, hungry python slithering from room to room is a serious violation of the local reptile ordinance. Tell her mom not to encourage the monkey to whip bananas at everyone who passes by the house. Oh, one more thing: the musicians in her band refuse to call her Big Bwana.

Don’t forget to pre-order here. “Female Creature (Portrait of a Woman, Part 2)” Shipping will take place the week of October 4th. Recorded in Mary’s home studio, the album showcases her extraordinary talents as a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and howling woman creature. Ungawa.
