We Live in time reminds us that we never have enough time with our loved ones and the places we visit are deeply woven into our stories. Starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, the A24 film follows a decades-long love story in which various locations serve as a backdrop for eternal memories, challenging events and important milestones. For director John Crowley, it was of utmost importance to show authentic life in London and the British countryside. Below is everything we know about the filming locations, including the county where Garfield grew up.

Where was We live in time Filmed?

We live in time was filmed in Herne Hill, London, and Surrey County, England. Crowley worked with production designer Alice Normington to portray these locations in an authentic light and incorporate them into the characters’ lives. “We’ve talked a lot about how certain places become part of your DNA,” Crowley said in a press conference. “Alice did a wonderful job not only with the couple’s various work and nesting spaces, but also with the liminal spaces that are important to the film: streets, gas stations and grocery stores that are expressions of contemporary city life.”

When Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) meet, they are living in the city. “We set the story specifically in Herne because it’s not particularly glamorous,” Crowley said in the short version. He added: “This felt important because we thought it would feel authentic to audiences while breaking out of the usual conventions of the romantic genre. We wanted a London that was just itself and focused on all the happiness and sadness that two people go through in life.”

In the film, Tobias can be seen leaving Herne Hill train station on the night of his first date with Almut. When they go for a walk the next morning, they stroll through Brockwell Park, which is in the same neighborhood.

As their relationship progresses, the couple eventually moves to the British countryside. Their home is represented by a property in the village of Hascombe, near Godalming. “I grew up in Surrey, where we filmed, and that somehow renegotiated my relationship with my home country, which I wanted to leave as soon as I could pursue my dream of becoming an actor,” Garfield said in the letter. He continued: “But when I got back there I was like, ‘Damn, I have to admit to my dad that it’s actually OK down here.’ It’s beautiful.’ I love that the film isn’t about touristy Britain. It’s a lackluster Britain where two people, a couple you might pass on the street without thinking about it, have something extraordinary happen in their lives.”
